If you were on a deserted island...

So the question in our household on Tuesday night was this:  If you were on a deserted island and you only had one song to which you could listen, what would it be?

We stayed up really late debating this one.  Jason argued for all sorts of songs, including The Box by Orbital (which is a half hour long!) and many Radiohead songs.

I stand by my choice: Toto's Africa.  It is cheesy 80s pop with just enough (not too much) melancholy thrown in to be appropriate in this situation.  Plus, it is a song I am ALWAYS in the mood to hear.  It is perfect.  There may be other songs I would also choose, but I'm sticking with Africa.

Any other ideas?

(On a totally unrelated topic, happy birthday, Jason!!!)

Busy weekend, part 2

Our Sunday started with this:

We hung out with Jason's parents in the morning, before they had to leave after lunch.  My mom got up here right before lunch, so we all went out to lunch together.  In the afternoon, Mom and I went to a baby shower for Neely that her co-workers hosted.

(I really wanted a good picture of the 3 of us, but, alas, it did not happen.)  We had a really nice time, and it was great to meet the people with whom Neely works.  They were all so sweet, and Neely received a ton of cute stuff!

That night, Sims was being Mr. Silly.  My mom was reading him a book, when he noticed that I had gotten out the camera.  As soon as he saw the camera, this is what he did.

Is this what he thinks we look like when we smile for the camera?  Or do we really look like this?  Then, he spent a while running back and forth from Mom to me.  He would hug one of us, then run to the other and hug that person.  We ate it up.

What can I say?  We're suckers for that kind of stuff.

Busy weekend, part 1

We had a fun and busy weekend.  Jason was a marshall at the SAS Championship, which kept him pretty occupied Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the sweltering heat.  Jason's parents came up on Friday to celebrate theirs and Jason's birthdays.  Except for Jason and his dad spending time at the tournament, we did a lot of hanging out at the house.  Including Saturday morning, when Sims and his granddad went outside to play.

I don't know if you can tell, but Sims is still in his pajamas.  It was quite a funny site.

He has a really large bruise and knot on his forehead from a really bad fall at school this past week.  It actually looks much better in the above pic than it had earlier in the week.  Talk about goose egg!

Later on in the day, Sims entertained us by playing the piano.

In the afternoon, we hung out in the backyard, where we haven't spent much time this summer.  The mosquitos seem to be dying off now.  It's surprising they have lasted as long as they did, considering our grass didn't last long at all.  We have the drought to thank for that.  Sims went around patting tree trunks.  When his granddad would copy him and pat the tree, Sims thought it was hilarious!  I'm thinking it's time to clean off the deck and spend more time in the desert backyard.  Sims seems to really enjoy himself out there.

You can probably see a trend here in some of the pics.  Sims is such a ham for the camera.

Well, that was our Saturday.  I'll post about Sunday tomorrow.

Same Old, Same Old

I haven't posted lately because there's just not much to post.  Nothing really exciting has been happening around here.  Last Tuesday Sims and I had our last parent/child swim lesson.  Yay!  I was ready for that to be over.  We were going to an indoor pool, and that water was cold!  I dreaded it every week - but no more!  Tuesday will still be pizza night though.  It's been a nice little tradition so far.

This past weekend was spent doing errands and stuff around the house.  Our next 3 weekends are going to be filled with fun activities, so this weekend was spent preparing.  We did have a fun dinner out with Alex and Neely on Sunday.  We always have a blast with them (and I'm not just saying that because Neely reads this blog.)  One of the fun upcoming events is Neely's baby shower that I am helping host in a week and a half.  I really love the invitations:

from Tiny Prints

(This is obviously not a picture with Neely's shower info on it.)  I'm really excited about the shower!  I'm also excited about the other shower for Neely that I am going to this weekend.  Jason's parents will also be visiting this weekend, and we have a wedding to attend in a few weeks.  So there will be lots of fun stuff coming up to blog about.  So hang in there.

Our weekend

This weekend seemed very short!  I guess that's because I am comparing it to Labor Day weekend that seemed to be the perfect length.  Oh, well.  Our weekend was filled with errands and church activities.  On Saturday, we went to our church's homecoming picnic at Lake Wheeler.

We all had a lot of fun.  Sims got to run around and play on the playground.  The weather was perfect.  It was a great day to spend outdoors.

After church on Sunday, there was a celebration honoring our Director of Children's Ministries.  Sims loved the cupcakes and the hula hoops.  Unfortunately, he was a little too small to play with the big kids in the hula hoop circle, but he tried.

Sims was so exhausted when we left church, he fell asleep before we could get out of the parking deck.  He was partied out!  It was a good weekend, even though it was too short!

Looking ahead

I know that Labor Day was just a few days ago, but I am already thinking about Halloween.  I know that it is essentially 2 months away, but Jason and I are already brainstorming some costume ideas for Sims.  I figure that this is the last year that we get to pick what his constume is without any of his input.  Next year he will probably want to be a superhero or something boring.

I am all about the homemade costumes or at least the non-store bought costumes.  It's not like I'm going to sew Sims a costume, but I would like for his costume to be something that we put together ourselves.  For example, Sims' costume last year:

I worked on Sims' astronaut outfit, and Jason made the space shuttle.  We really loved how it turned out.  The problem is now people are expecting something big from us!  I guess it's good that I'm starting to think early.  We already have a couple of ideas that we are excited about.

By the way, don't you love Sims' double chin in the first picture?  Now that's a look only a baby can pull off!

If you are wondering why in the world Jason was wearing an Hawaiian shirt in October, that was his costume.  He was the North Carolina weather - confused about the season.

Boo-boos and bullies?

At school yesterday, Sims had a little accident.  One of the older kids in his class, who is almost 2 years old, pushed him, and he fell into the bookcase or table or something.  He has a bruise on the bridge of his nose, but apparantly he was very good about letting his teachers put ice on it.  Now I know that the kid who pushed him wasn't a bully.  He's not even 2 years old.

I just took it all in stride because I was reminded of what we went through earlier this year.  You see, Sims was the "bully" in his infant class.  He quite often would bite the other kids, and not the kids who were close to his age.  He would bite the little babies who probably couldn't even roll away from him.  It was pretty awful.  As soon as he went to the toddler class, things changed, and he hasn't biten anyone since.  We are very thankful of that!

So when another child does something not very nice to Sims, I have to remember what the parents of those little babies were going through.

Weekend Recap

Our Labor Day weekend was filled with no plans at all!  We just did whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted.  The extra day really helped me to relax and enjoy it.  I even got to go out shopping on Saturday morning and came home with a bunch of fall clothes for Sims.

Unfortunately, Sims woke up from his Saturday afternoon nap with one of his eyes oozing a bunch of gunk.  It was pretty nasty looking and only got worse from there.  He seemed to be in good spirits, but we didn't do too much outside of the house because of it.  Sims and I even stayed home from church on Sunday morning.  Just in case he was contagious, I didn't want him to spread it to all the nursery kids.  It was a good thing too, since the doctor told us it was contagious, when we took him in yesterday.  He has an ear infection that is affecting his eyes.  He's now on antibiotics that already seem to help, and his eyes are looking much better today.

Since Sims was acting normal, we did make a short trip to the park to let him run around.  You can see his sad looking eyes.

On Monday, we did some much needed yard work and piddled around the house, which is something I rarely get to do.  It's also nice knowing that it's a short work week!

Special Day

Happy Labor Day!  Not only is today Labor Day, but it is also the anniversary of Sims' baptism.  I can't believe it's been a year, since that special day.

It was so wonderful to have family and friends there for the baptism.  We are thankful that Neely, Alex and Jeff agreed to be Sims' godparents.  I know he will appreciate you all even more as he grows up!

I hope you are enjoying your long weekend!

Sims and the mysterious rash

It may sound like a B-rated movie or a Scooby-Doo episode, but a mysterious rash has taken over Sims body.  I tried to take a picture of it on his face, and this was the best shot I could get.  It doesn't seem to photograph well.

He had roseola a few weeks ago, and that rash has been long gone.  This one has been accompanied with no other symptoms, so I have no idea what's going on.  It doesn't seem to be bothering him, but it doesn't look good.

Sims has been amazingly well-mannered considering he has 2 molars coming in.  It's been a while since he has gotten some new teeth, and we were really surprised this weekend to see these poking through his gums.  (He doesn't let us look in there very often.  I noticed them while he was crying.)

Besides being overly tired yesterday evening, Sims has been pretty happy through all of this.

In other news, I joined a fitness group at work that meets at lunch 4 days a week.  They meet in my building, and it's free!  You can't beat that!  We do different things each day, and I am so excited about trying strength yoga today.  This is just what I have needed.  When else do I have a chance to exercise?
